A wall fails from the bottom up. The crack you'll notice in a few winters started somewhere in the footing or the mortar — a base that was never set below the frost, a joint that was never tooled tight. So we set the footing to depth, mix the mortar right, and lay a dead-level first course before a single brick goes up.
Then it's slow, deliberate work: brick and stone set plumb to the pattern, joints kept full, the wall struck and tooled to shed water. Straight courses, plumb walls, water kept out of the wall.
It's not glamorous. But it's why a wall or chimney we built still stands straight long after the season we built it in — and why we'd rather do the footing right than do the job twice.
