Loose-leaf tea being poured into a glass

A neighbourhood store · Port Moody

It poured one cup of tea, and never stopped growing.

The store at 229 Newport Drive started as a loose-leaf tea specialist. It became a refillery, a gift shop and a stationery store without ever leaving the same front door.

An unsolicited concept by X9 Lab Media. Video and photography are stock placeholders.

Chapter One · The Origin

First, there was the tea.

Before it was a general store, Unmediocre was a tea shop — a wall of loose-leaf scooped to order, the slow business of knowing a customer's everyday blend by the second visit. That was the whole shop. A counter, a scale, and tins of leaf that smelled like the place before you'd opened the door.

It could have stayed that. Plenty of good shops do. But a tea shop that takes care over a single gram of leaf tends to attract people who care about the other small things too — what's in the jar, what the gift is wrapped in, what the card says. So the store kept saying yes, and the floor kept rearranging itself to make room.

A general store is just a tea shop that refused to specialise.

Chapter Two · Under One Roof

Then it grew a refillery, a gift counter, a paper table.

What's remarkable about 229 Newport Drive isn't any single counter — it's that they share one floor. Bring an empty jar and fill it. Pick a small-batch gift and have it wrapped. Choose a card and a pen at the same table. The tea is still there, anchoring all of it.
