A bench in the lobby

Walk into the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver, off the marble of West Georgia Street, and somewhere past the lobby there is a small bench where time gets taken apart. A movement comes out of its case the size of a coin, and under a loupe it opens into a city of wheels — each one turned, jewelled, and meant to mesh with the next for years without being thought about.

Otto Friedl has been at this since 1960. Sixty-five years is long enough that the work has outlasted brands, fashions, and most of the storefronts on the block. What stays is the discipline: a fine Swiss movement, vintage or modern, brought back to running not by force but by attention.

What the loupe sees

Service is unglamorous and exact. The movement is stripped to its parts, cleaned of old oil that has gummed to varnish, inspected for the wear that shows up first in the escapement, then oiled in fractions of a drop and regulated until it keeps time across the positions a wrist will hold it in.
