For about thirty years the luthier has worked in Vancouver, and on Main Street the work goes on the way it always has: a bow rehaired, a crack drawn closed, a soundpost nudged a hair until the whole body opens up. None of it is loud. All of it is the difference between an instrument a player avoids and one they reach for.

A violin is mostly air held in a shape, and the shape is unforgiving. Take down too much and the voice goes thin; leave too much and it never speaks. Restoration, varnishing, the slow amber coats left to cure — the bench asks for exactness, not haste, and gives it back in tone.

Strings, woodwind, brass: the vocabulary changes, the discipline does not. Read the instrument, do only what it needs, hand it back better than it came.

Instruments wait in rows along the wall — violins, violas, the occasional horn brought in for a service. What leaves the bench looks the same as what arrived. It just plays like itself again.
