    The piece itself

    Whatever you've carried in — a print, a photograph, a child's drawing, a document. It sits at the centre and every other choice serves it.

  2. / 02 · MAT BOARD

    Acid-free mat

    A bevelled window of conservation board lifts the glazing off the work and gives the eye somewhere to rest. Acid-free, so it won't burn the edges over the years.

  3. / 03 · GLAZING

    Glass or acrylic

    The front layer. UV-filtering options hold back the light that fades a piece. Chosen for the wall it will hang on.

  4. / 04 · MOULDING

    The frame

    Wood or finished moulding, cut and joined at the corners to the exact outside dimension. Structure and finish in one.

  5. / 05 · BACKING

    Sealed & backed

    A rigid backing board, dust-sealed and wired to hang true. Built once, properly — reversible, so a conservator could undo it.
