The Commission

Five movements

A redesign, in five movements.

An inherited ring rarely arrives ready to wear. We follow one through the bench — from the piece as received, to wax, to cast, to set, to the ring it becomes. Scroll the spread.

Nº 01 · Before

The heirloom, as received

A grandmother's band, worn thin and out of fashion — but never out of meaning. We begin by listening to the story it carries.

Hand-carving a wax model of a ring
Nº 02 · Wax

The wax model

The new form is carved in wax and tried by hand, refined until the proportions sit true on the finger.

Casting and finishing metal at the goldsmith's bench
Nº 03 · Cast

The casting

Where possible the original gold is reused — the same metal, recast, so the heirloom literally lives on inside the new ring.

Setting a stone into a ring
Nº 04 · Set

The setting

The original stone is cleaned, examined and seated by hand — each prong burnished so the gem is held for another generation.

The finished, restored ring
Nº 05 · Reborn

Reborn

The same gold, the same stone, a wholly new ring — ready to be worn every day, and handed down again.

At the bench

Bespoke & restoration.

The goldsmith working at the bench

The hand behind the work

“Old gold isn't scrap. It's the part of the story you get to keep.”

Much of the bench work here is the patient kind — the resizing, the retipping, the redesign of a ring someone has worn for fifty years. Goldsmith David French works the metal directly, by hand, the way a small atelier always has.
